James Harden has helped the Cleveland Cavaliers in clutch moments.

For his entire career, James Harden has been known as one of the best all-around scorers in the NBA, and that expectation was certainly something the Cleveland Cavaliers were hoping he’d bring after joining the organization just before the trade deadline.

Harden has also gained a reputation for elevating the centers he’s played with, which is favorable for the Cavaliers, considering they have both star big men in Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

However, the area where Harden has possibly helped Cleveland the most is neither in his scoring nor in his partnership with the frontcourt; it’s been his ability to calm things down in tense moments and elevate the team down the stretch.

Since the Cavaliers traded for Harden, they’ve been one of the better fourth-quarter teams in the NBA. Cleveland is averaging 28.9 points while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor, with an overall +/- of +1.7 in the final 12 minutes of games.

Going beyond that, the Cavaliers have played 41 minutes in clutch time since acquiring Harden. In that situation, Cleveland has an offensive rating of 126.8 for a net rating of 23.4. For reference, before the Harden trade, the Cavaliers had a net rating of 0.6 in clutch time.

Cleveland’s fourth-quarter comeback against the New Orleans Pelicans is a perfect example of this.

The Cavaliers outscored the Pelicans 35-18 in the final 12 minutes of Saturday night’s game, and Harden was a key piece of that. Yes, with his scoring, but more importantly, his game management.

This impact is something even Kenny Atkinson has noticed and pointed out after the Cavaliers’ win over the Pelicans.

“James has calmed us,” said Cleveland’s head coach.

“I think he's got great poise. He's got a real understanding of the clock. It seems like a small thing, but he knows when to go, when not to go, when to hold it, and who to call into the pick and roll. Like, he's just got...
He's so collected, He's so calm.”

As the playoffs get closer, the Cavaliers will obviously need Harden to continue to scoring and playmaking, but perhaps the most important piece to Cleveland’s postseason success is how the veteran guard performs when the game is on the line.
